  • Live Workshop

When I was in art school decades ago, I had a professor that inspired in me a passion for the magical properties of color. He announced to the class that by the end of the semester we would all be able to take any color and make an exact replica of it using primary colors, and neutrals (black and white). I spent hours working on graphs of colors - primary, secondary, tertiary, analogous, mono chromatic, complementary…  And sure enough, by the end of the semester I was able to create what seemed like an infinite spectrum of color.

In this workshop, we will artfully create beautiful color story boards and explore the versatility of the color spectrum. These will be life-long tools to help you conceive of colors for your very individual color palette combinations. By the end of this course, you will also be able to match any color from the basic primary colors, and black and white.

With a new mastery of color, we will be making our own water color paints, lake pigments, and inks, using a variety of natural ingredients from earth pigments and plant materials. At the end, we'll explore our new materials, making artwork using our created paint and ink.

  • Master the art of creating any color from primaries
  • Build unique color palettes for any medium
  • Make your own watercolor paints and lake pigments
  • Create fresh inks from natural materials
  • Gather and process a variety of plant materials to dye fabric
  • Produce original artwork using your new skills

NEW CLASS TECHNIQUES WE’LL EXPLORE

  1. Creating color story boards as a reference
  2. Mastering color blending to match any color
  3. Finding your unique color palettes
  4. Sourcing natural pigments

  6. Making lake pigments
